Later this summer, the moon will block out the sun during a total solar eclipse — the first in the continental United States in 38 years.

Thursday night, as the City of Hopkinsville celebrated the upcoming celestial phenomenon while sponsoring the Hoptown Hoppers baseball game, Princeton native Luke Brown provided a quasi-preview by nearly shutting out Muhlenberg County.

Allowing one run and striking out four in eight innings, Brown, a former Hopkinsville Tiger and Caldwell County Tiger, earned his fourth win in six games and led the Hoppers to a 9-2 victory.

He also walked four and scattered seven hits, but Hoptown provided plenty of run support to inch Hoptown closer to clinching an Ohio Valley League West Division title.

Brown, who will be a sophomore at Murray State in the fall, threw 106 pitches and also got some key plays from his defense, as the Hoppers turned three double plays. The third came in the top of the eighth inning, helping Brown to escape a bases-loaded jam, moments after walking in the first run of the contest.

Jesse Philp, who leads the team in saves, surrendered a run in the ninth, but finished off the game to give Hoptown its 20th win in 33 games. The Hoppers now lead the Paducah Chiefs (16-17) by four games in the West Division with six games remaining.

South Alabama’s Griffin Rivers had one of his best games of the year for the Hoppers in the victory. He robbed a pair of runs to start the game with a full-extension diving catch to end the frame. He proceeded to go 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs.

Daryl Myers drove in a pair of runs, Taylor Fought remained red-hot with an RBI hit and two runs scored and Zach Duvall scored twice, including his second  “Little League home run” of the year in the seventh, which occurred when the Stallions committed two of their five errors, allowing Duvall to race all the way around the bases.

Nearly 300 fans watched Thursday’s game at Hopkinsville High School’s Tiger Field.

Hoptown (20-13) will see Muhlenberg County twice more today, as the Stallions host the Hoppers in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 5 p.m. and the second will begin at approximately 7:05. Both are seven-inning contests.

Dubois County (25-9) has already clinched the East Division crown. The Bombers currently lead the second-place Henderson Flash and Owensboro Oilers by 10 1/2 games.
