To say Sunday’s Ohio Valley League playoff matchup was a roller coaster would be an understatement.

With a combined total of 17 runs and 24 hits, the Hoptown Hoppers and Muhlenberg County Stallions gave those in attendance a show with the Hoppers squandering a seven-run lead.

“That was a little too close for comfort,” Hoptown coach Keirce Kimbel said.

The Hoppers held on for the 9-8 victory against the Stallions and earned the right to advance and take on the Henderson Flash in the OVL semifinals.

“First third of the game, it was looking like it was going to be a really close one-run ball game,” Kimbel said.

Neither team could scrape across a run in the first three innings but Hoptown’s Nolen Milton was able to score Reese Alexiades for the first run of the game in the fourth inning.

Much like Friday’s game, Milton had two big hits to help propel the Hoppers to

victory.

“Honestly I just went up there and wanted to do what I was capable of doing,” Milton said of his approach at the plate Sunday.

Muhlenberg responded with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead but that lead would be short-lived.

Hoptown managed eight runs in the bottom of the fifth with the majority of them coming with no outs.

Muhlenberg starter Camron Harper struggled in the frame and didn’t record an out.

“That inning started with Dalton Dedas having a really good AB (at bat) with two strikes,” he said. “He battled and he poked the ball in the six hole and that’s what got it all started.”

Zach Duvall had two RBIs in the fifth but the big hit came off the bat of Milton again.

The Clarksville native stepped up with the bases loaded and still no outs.

“Normally the side arm guys I have trouble with,” he said of the Stallion pitcher. “I just told myself to stay up the middle the whole at bat.”

Milton took the pitch up and over the left field wall for a grand slam and his 10th RBI of the series.

Kimbel said while Milton’s hit wasn’t with two outs, it was a timely hit.

“It’s huge,” he said of the home run in the fifth inning. “It goes without saying. Two out hits when ball games, that’s what my JUCO coach always preached at.”

Hoptown starter Jake Larson said he felt at ease after the big inning but the Stallions scored five runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-7. After adding another in the seventh when Jesse Philp was in the game, the Stallions offense stymied.

The Hoppers now advance to take on the Henderson Flash and their revamped roster at 7:05 p.m. today at Hopkinsville High School.

Kimbel said he’s sending OVL wins leader Dustin Berrong to the mound.

“Dustin’s got the ball tomorrow,” he said. “We’re going to give them our best guy, the league’s best guy in my opinion. He’s going to come out and do his thing.”

Henderson beat Madisonville in its first OVL playoff series.
