For Tyler Smithhart, the return to Christian County High School’s Colonel Gym was a happy reunion.

Smithhart, who left Christian County last spring to return to coach his alma mater Henderson County. saw his Colonels rout Christian County 78-52 in a boys’ high school basketball game Tuesday night.

Christian County appeared ready to prove to their former coach that it was a threat to win the Region 2 championship this season by taking a 20-15 lead in the first quarter. However, Henderson scored the final bucket of the period and went on to outscore Christian County 32-6 in the second quarter to take a 49-26 halftime advantage.

The key to the run was a switch to a 1-3-1 defense that confused the host Colonels and left them shooting errant three-pointers.

“Well, I give all the credit to Henderson County because they had a game plan and they executed it,” Christian County interim head coach Kyle Eades said. “We haven’t worked on the 1-3-1 much and that’s not the kids’ fault. They did a good job scouting us.”

Christian County turned the ball over 21 times in the game to only 10 by Henderson, which also nearly doubled the host Colonels in rebounding on the night.

Henderson  stretched its lead to more than 30 points in the second half and were never challenged by Christian County.

“They’re a very legitimate contender in this region,” Eades said. “They’re physical and we were only going to get one look. They did a great job boxing out.”

Demarius Poindexter led Christian County with 14 points.

It was the first time in five years that Henderson County beat Christian County. It was a span that covered seven games.
