New Trigg County Chamber of Commerce Membership Director Beth Sumner said she thinks it’s important to invest in the community and one another to encourage growth in the community.

“I do think a big piece of it is figuring out what the community’s needs are and the businesses and how to bring those about,” said Sumner, a Cadiz resident who is retired from Trigg County Public Schools.

Sumner previously worked 27 years with the school district, the last 16 at the district’s central office, where she retired in September of 2020 from her position as assistant superintendent of instruction.

The chamber’s board of directors voted unanimously to choose Sumner to succeed Connie Allen, with Chamber President Ashley Johnson noting that Sumner’s qualifications and her work with the school board had an impact on the chamber board’s decision to hire her as the next membership director.

“She is energetic and has the fire we need,” Johnson said. “She was so excited about the position, and I think our businesses will look forward to working with her. She wanted to get started this week.”

As membership director, Sumner will have responsibilities including obtaining new memberships, coordinating and conducting activities to enhance the chamber’s memberships, coordinating chamber community activities and serving as primary liaison for the chamber’s regional partnerships.

The wife of Trigg County Hospital CEO John Sumner, she begins her new duties on Feb. 1.

Johnson said she personally wants Sumner to focus on the chamber’s current leadership and how to engage that leadership during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“We’ll definitely focus in on things we can do in our community right this minute,” Johnson noted.

She said Sumner’s first board meeting will be on Feb. 5 at the Renaissance Center.

Sumner, who described herself as a cheerleader for Trigg County, said she is excited about the opportunity and looking forward to working with the community and its various businesses.
