The blonde girl on Holiday Burgers’ logo is donning a captain’s hat and making the move to Lake Barkley, where the iconic Hopkinsville restaurant’s owners are opening a second location at Cap’n Jim’s Grill.
Sherry Powell, who owns Holiday Burgers with husband Charlie Powell, said they took advantage of an opportunity that presented itself in deciding to open the new restaurant.
“Every time we went out to the lake we said, ‘Man, we’d like to have that restaurant,’ ” Powell said of their interest in the location.
She noted that Tammi Head, who operates Cap’n Jim’s and another store, wanted to take a break from the grill.
So Sherry and husband Charlie signed an almost four-year lease to operate a second Holiday Burgers location at the marina at the Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
The new restaurant opens Mother’s Day weekend and will be known as Holiday Burgers by the lake.
It won’t serve the “meat and three” plate lunches available in Hopkinsville but will have its homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese along with hamburgers, Philly cheesesteaks and the likes of cookies, blondies, brownies and ice cream.
Powell said the new restaurant will have its first opening this Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will open again May 14-16 and on May 21-22.
Following Memorial Day week, Holiday Burgers on the lake will be open six days a week, closing on Tuesdays. Hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The new restaurant is still in need of servers and cooks, and Sherry said applications for the positions are available at both the Cadiz and Hopkinsville locations.
She and her husband came to Hopkinsville after retiring, Charlie Powell from FedEx and Sherry from the health care industry.
But they found retirement didn’t agree with them and soon bought the restaurant, becoming its third or fourth owners.
The LaFayette Road restaurant has been in Hopkinsville since 1967, and the Powells bought it about six years ago, in 2015. Two years ago they introduced a Holiday Burgers food truck.
Patrons can find more information about the new restaurant by visiting lakebarkleymarina.com/holiday-burgers/ or by searching for Holiday Burgers on the lake on Facebook, where they can see an image of the restaurant’s new logo.
The modified logo includes the familiar young girl, now sporting a captain’s hat and standing in front of the lake, a fish jumping from the water.
Dining at the restaurant is outdoor only, with seating available on the dock.
