The Trigg County Wildcats claimed a 13-point victory Thursday by a score of 71-58 in their season opener at home against the Heritage Christian Academy Warriors.
Trigg County applied heavy pressure throughout the game, especially early on as they jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the first quarter before the Warriors were able to get a bucket.
“I think that our pressure bothered them early especially, pressure is really what I would say we excelled at tonight,” head coach Mason Burgett said. “We were hitting shots really early and that allows you to get into that pressure. If you’re not hitting those shots then you have to come back and play half court man and that doesn’t suit us as well so when we’re hitting shots, we can be dangerous defensively.”
The Wildcats had four players score in double figures with two picking up double-doubles on the night. Jhaden Vaughn led the way grabbing 19 points and hauled in 15 rebounds while Luke Washer picked up 14 points with three from behind the arc and hauled in 10 rebounds. Landon Stewart had 13 points with nine from beyond the arc and hauled in one rebound. Jerimyah Shearer had 11 points with three from beyond the arc and six rebounds. Aquarius Gude had seven points including three from beyond the arc and hauled in one rebound. Hunter Reynolds had five points with three from beyond the arc to go with two rebounds. TayShaun Linton had two points on the night, both from the charity stripe and hauled in one rebound.
“Landon Stewart hit some good shots, Jhaden obviously when he gives you what he’s capable of it’s pretty good, so I’d say Jhaden, Landon Stewart, thought Luke Washer played a good game, those three,” Burgett said.
Burgett spoke postgame on his team’s performance, specifically jumping out to their early 15-0 lead in the first quarter and what they’ll take from it moving forward into the rest of the season.
“We had a big lead bringing in our subs and we got that big lead without hitting a high percentage of shots, so we really didn’t even shoot the ball that well and still put up pretty good amount of points and got several shot attempts and that’s really what we look at more than anything, is field goal attempts,” Burgett said.
He talked about going in future games with the same amount of early intensity and try to carry it through throughout the game instead of letting it slip away from them a little bit.
“We gotta just keep going, we can’t get content when we pull up a little bit of a lead, we gotta keep going and keep pushing,” Burgett said.
