Ice Skatin’ on

the Square

When: Friday through Sunday, Dec. 7-9

Where: Founders Square, Hopkinsville

Info: The 2,500-square foot rink, which measures approximately 60 feet long, will be positioned within the Founders Square parking lot and accommodate 80 skaters during a single session. Skatin’ on the Square will be set up from Dec. 7-9, giving individuals and groups ample chances to hit the ice during 16 different 90-minute sessions. Cost is $10 per person, which includes skate rental and an hour-an-a-half session in the rink. While walk-up sales will be available, Skatin’ on the Square attendees are encouraged to register and purchase their session(s) in advance by visiting tinyurl.com/SkatinOnTheSquare. Pre-registration will guarantee a spot on the ice. Groups of six or more people are asked to call 270-887-4290 or stop by the Parks and Recreation Center at 2600 Thomas St. to make reservations.

Info: Get your picture taken with Santa in one of the antique fire trucks, make a Christmas craft with the Pennyroyal Arts Council, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. The Journey Church will set up a warming station outside where Salvation Army will be serving hot dogs and the Hopkinsville Fire Department will be popping popcorn for the crowd. Step next door to the Christian County Historical Society for stories with the Christian County Literacy Council and to be mesmerized by a model train layout. At 1 p.m., Santa will read Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar” Express to the young and young at heart.

HES Christmas

parade

Where: Main Street, Hopkinsville

Info: A variety of holiday-themed floats will roll through downtown Hopkinsville. The theme of this year’s parade will be “Songs of Christmas.” Groups and organizations entering floats can get creative and use any favorite holiday song as the theme for their float entry. Hopkinsville’s own country singer/songwriter Brice Long will be the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade. The parade starts at Christian County Middle School at 5:15 p.m. and winds south on Main Street through downtown Hopkinsville. Cash Prizes will be awarded for Grand Champion Float, Second Place, Chamber Best Business, and the WHVO/WKDZ People’s Choice Award. Float entry fee is $21.20 and an unwrapped Christmas toy. To enter a unit or float, or if you have questions, please contact the Hopkinsville Division of Parks and Recreation at 270-887-4290. Christmas in Elkton and parade

When: 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8

Where: Public Square, Elkton

Info: Businesses will have open house, special sales, refreshments, and other activities throughout the day. The Welcome Center in the Historic Todd County Courthouse will have free refreshments. The parade will leave from Todd County Central High School on South Main Street, then head north towards Public Square, exiting the Square on West Main Street and ending at the Milliken Memorial Community House. Traffic will be blocked to Public Square starting around 5:30 p.m. until all festivities are over. The Grand Marshall of the parade this year is Elkton resident Harold Ross, a University of Kentucky graduate and member of the 1958 NCAA Championship Basketball Team. Later that same year, he became head basketball coach at Elkton High School. And, in 1963, Ross became the first head basketball coach at Todd County Central High School, where he later also served as principal. Following the parade at about 7 p.m., Santa Claus will visit with everyone at the Milliken Memorial Community House, 208 W. Main St. There will be free digital pictures with Santa Claus, and free refreshments until 8:30 p.m.
