George Oliver installs the base of a Christmas tree Tuesday outside Oak Grove Community Center. Oliver and his wife, City Council member Jackie, procured the real tree for the center, which will be hosting a lighting ceremony Nov. 30, the first for the center in recent memory. Director Melissa Lynch said the tree lighting ceremony was supposed to bring Oak Grove together to start off the holiday season. Jackie Oliver said it should have been done a long time ago, but the city lacked the leadership to make it happen, so she and Lynch had partnered up to make it happen. Oliver said she and Lynch wanted to make the community center better for the residents of Oak Grove. While it has improved, Oliver said it’s still mostly just used for kids to play basketball. Everyone is invited to the ceremony, but the pair is not expecting the entire city to turn out. Oliver described it as a building process that will be built upon each year.
