Hi everyone, glad to be here.

A bit of an introduction about me, my name is Matt Stahl, I’m 20 years old and I just finished my sophomore year at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, where I study journalism. I’m originally from Nashville and I’m going to be The Eagle Post’s summer intern.

I got into journalism after it became abundantly clear during high school that my dreams of playing in the National Football League were probably not going to come true. As a general rule, teams aren’t looking for a tight end who is smaller than a cornerback and slower than defensive lineman.

After coming to terms with that, I remembered a teacher telling me that I should look into sports journalism, as sports are what I most often wrote papers about. Most other career prospects sounded miserable, so off to WKU I went to learn the craft.

My second semester at WKU, I applied to work on the sports staff of the College Heights Herald, our student newspaper. Sports didn’t hire me, so I went to work on news staff, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

I got on to sports the next semester but I continued to work on the news staff as well. Through my time at the Herald, I’ve had the opportunity to cover a lot of interesting things. Our parking and transportation department raised rates, our own university sued us over an open records request, we had the 15th anniversary of a grisly murder and suffered through the epic collapse of our baseball team, who lost ten of their last eleven games to finish outside of the Conference USA tournament picture.

After this summer I’ll be headed back to WKU to continue my work at the Herald, as football reporter and on a yet undecided news beat.

I came upon this opportunity through the Kentucky Press Association’s internship program. When I was contacted by the Eagle Post I was thrilled, as this meant that I could follow my journalistic dreams this summer, which, when you think about it, sounds a whole lot better than flipping burgers or valeting cars. Those were my other options.

Now that I’m here, I’m already learning a lot. I covered and shot photos for a story about the 101st Sustainment Brigade’s memorial groundbreaking and casing of the colors before their deployment. That story, which is in today’s paper, was my first time going on post at Fort Campbell.

I can’t wait to spend this summer telling the stories of this community and I appreciate that you the readers trust me to tell them. I’ll do my absolute best to keep that trust intact as I go through this summer.

Thanks for reading this piece and thanks for letting me spend the summer here doing what I love to do. If you have any ideas for a story, I’ll always appreciate them.
