Mayor James R. Knight, Jr. has promoted Melissa Clayton, who currently serves as comptroller, to lead finance operations for the City of Hopkinsville, according to a city press release.
“After conducting a broad search, it was clear the best person to lead the city’s finances was already in-house. Melissa has been a tremendous asset to the city and has the right balance of experience, skills, and innovation to continue to move the city forward,” said Knight.
Clayton has been with the city since October of 2011 and will take over as CFO on February 6, allowing for cross-training and a smooth transition following the retirement of current CFO Robert Martin.
Clayton began her career with the City of Hopkinsville as a Revenue and License Specialist, and in April of 2013, she was promoted to Payroll Specialist. She then was promoted to Finance Coordinator in May of 2016, and then to Comptroller in February of 2020.
Clayton’s credentials include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Tennessee Tech University and an Associate’s of Applied Science Degree in Accounting from Columbia State Community College. She is currently enrolled at Tennessee Tech University obtaining her Master’s Degree in Accountancy and mid-way through the testing process to receive her CPA license.
“I look forward to advancing my career with the City of Hopkinsville in the role of CFO and I am excited to lead a great Finance Team and continue to bring exceptional service to city employees, agencies, council members, and the residents of Hopkinsville,” said Clayton.
