An official with Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has notified officials in western Kentucky of reports that large numbers of dead Asian carp have been discovered in portions of Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake.
Jessica Morris of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife said officials received reports on Monday that the carp were found in Blood River on Kentucky Lake and in Little River on Lake Barkley.
“We counted roughly 1,000 Asian carp floating in Blood River that had been dead for several days,” Morris said in an email that was provided to the New Era by Lyon Judge-Executive Wade White.
White has been instrumental in leading efforts to combat issues surrounding the carp in the two lakes.
Morris noted in her email that officials weren’t able to take samples from the fish for laboratory analysis because they have to be very fresh, dead for fewer than 24 hours, in order to do the testing. Additionally, because the samples were unavailable, Morris said officials could not make an exact determination for cause of death.
She did say that officials could speculate that environmental conditions played a big role in this particular fish kill.
“Last week we had a very cold rain which contrasted sharply with the warm water temperatures,” Morris said. “Asian carp often feed at the surface of the water and would be some of the first fish affected by the changing water temps. The stress of coping with a quickly changing water temp as well as the environmental bacteria that are known to affect Asian carp (large Asian carp kill in spring of 2017), probably contributed to this die off.”
White urges anyone who sees a “die off” to contact either Kentucky Fish and Wildlife or War on Carp, the ongoing effort to deplenish the numbers of carp, as soon as possible.
