A Hopkinsville man died in an alleged hunting incident Sunday night near Crofton, leading Conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to investigate what happened, according to a Fish and Wildlife Resources press release.
Conservation officers, Christian County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Kentucky State Police were notified at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday that a man was found dead in the area of the 23000 block of McKinney Road.
An initial investigation revealed that Charles Newton, 58, died after being shot by Julian Newton, 63, Sharon Grove, according to the release.
The release stated Julian was hunting from his vehicle parked along the edge of a field, while Charles and his wife were reportedly on an all-terrain vehicle looking for deer and crossing a power line clearing.
Julian reportedly told investigators that he believed Charles and his wife had left the area before he saw what he thought was a deer.
Julian fired his gun and struck Charles in the head, the release stated.
Charles was pronounced dead at the scene by Christian County Coroner Scott Daniels.
Conservation officers are continuing to investigate the incident, the release added.
