Plan for road closures Saturday for Hoptown Half/5K

Maps provided by Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department

HALF MARATHON ROUTE STREETS (7 a.m. start)

- Main Street (starting line)

- Cox Mill Road (from North Main to Country Club; from Deepwood to Gary Lane)

- Deepwood Subdivision (Wayne, Shelia, Sherwood & Deepwood streets)

- Gary Lane (from Cox Mill to Lafayette)

- LaFayette Road (from Gary Lane to Pardue Lane)

Hopkinsville motorists will need to plan for extra travel time on Saturday morning on some of the city’s major thoroughfares as runners take to city streets for the Inaugural Hoptown Half Marathon and 5K, presented by Planters Bank and Jennie Stuart Health.

The races, which could have a total of up to 700 runners, will begin at 7 a.m. The half marathon runners have until 11 a.m. to finish their course.

Both the half marathon (13.1 miles) and the 5K (3.1 miles) race will begin on Main Street in front of Ferrell’s Snappy Service and head south. The 5K race will start at 7:15 a.m. (after the half), allowing the half marathon runners to move in front and minimize the larger packs of runners together. The 5K event will finish sooner than the half marathon. Runners have been instructed to run on the right-hand side of the roads and will be accompanied by law enforcement in lead and trail vehicles.

The course for both the half marathon and the 5K event takes runners to the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail to head to the downtown finish line. The half marathon course joins the greenway at Pardue Lane by the Dog Park.

The 5K route moves to the greenway at Faulkner Drive. The course takes all runners north on the greenway to 15th Street where they will head east to Canton Pike then over to Bethel Street. Runners will head north and down the hill on Bethel Street (behind First United Methodist Church) en route to Ninth Street where they will turn left (west) toward the finish line. The race finish line is just west of the Little River Bridge on Ninth Street.

The half marathon route continues out Main Street and onto Cox Mill Road, through the Deepwood Subdivision, Country Club Lane and out to Eagle Way. Across the bypass the course heads to Gary Lane to LaFayette Road and back to Pardue Lane before picking up the greenway toward downtown.

Local law enforcement agencies will be accompanying the lead runners for traffic clearance and a “grim sweeper” will be trailing the last runners. Traffic control officers and other race volunteers will be manning intersections to stop traffic as runners cross the intersections. Motorists are asked to exercise patience for the safety of everyone.

Several streets will only allow one-way traffic during the race period. Race officials and local law enforcement have worked together on plans to minimize traffic inconveniences and maximize traffic flow.
