Although it may seem unlikely, swimming and movie watching are a match made in heaven, said Joe Wilson, Hopkinsville YMCA senior program director, when explaining the YMCA's new Dive-In events.

"We were just trying to look for a good way for folks to be able to use our swimming pool and make it a fun event," Wilson said.

Community members will have the opportunity to give the activity a try during the first Dive-In of the season at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hopkinsville YMCA, 7805 Eagle Way.

This is the second year Hopkinsville YMCA has offered this programming.

"We tried this with a couple of movies last summer and it was a great success," he said. "People just like being able to come in, swim and watch a movie at the same time."

Saturday's Dive-In will feature a showing of "Ralph Breaks the Internet." Admission per person costs $8 for non-members and $5 for members.

"On one hand it seems like, well, how could we not have already done something like this, but it hadn't been done before until last year," he said.

Admission is limited to the first 75 guests who attend. With the event beginning at 6 p.m., guests will enjoy about two hours of swimming before the film begins at sundown.

The films will be shown on a large, inflatable screen provided by a local church, Wilson said.

"It's a lot like a drive-in, except you are on a pool float," he said.

All of the films selected are family-friendly and relatively new, he added.

"Family is one of the things we like to promote, so this is an opportunity for families who are looking for something to do … you don't have to go very far and it doesn't cost a lot of money," he said. "This is an opportunity for the YMCA to offer something for the community to do."

Light concessions such as popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and drinks will be available for purchase. Kona Ice also will serve as a vendor during these events.

Wilson expects guests will be heading home from Dive-Ins around 10 p.m. Upcoming Dive-Ins are scheduled for July 13 and Aug. 3.
