The death of a family dog led to assault charges for a Logan County man.

Jeffrey L. Covington, 56, Lewisburg, was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched his niece in the mouth following the death of the family dog.

According to a Hopkinsville police report, Covington showed up to the home on Wilshire Circle after the victim's mother's dog died.

Covington accused the victim, whose name was not in the report, of killing the dog.

He then reportedly punched the victim in the mouth and pulled her from the car. A witness had to physically drag Covington off the victim, the report states.

Based on the victim's swollen lip and scratches on her back, police arrested Covington and charged him with assault fourth degree (minor injury).
