Claude M. Mergenthal, 101, Cadiz, died at 2:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at his home of natural causes.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1698 Canton Road, Cadiz, with the Rev. Gregory Trawick officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at the St. Henry Catholic Church Cemetery in Aurora.

Visitation will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Goodwin Funeral Home Inc. in Cadiz, with a prayer service starting at 6 p.m.

A native of Sadorus, Illinois, he was born Sept. 6, 1917, the son of the late Frank and Luella (Orrell) Mergenthal.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a fire controlman aboard the famous destroyer, USS The Sullivans. After his discharge in late 1945, he returned to the Cincinnati area where he worked as a commercial pipefitter for Carrier Heating and Air for over 35 years and held membership in Pipefitters Local 392.

He was a Mason, a member of the Oleika Shriners in Lexington, and a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Cadiz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dennie Mergenthal; his daughter, Claudia Mergenthal; his stepson, Don Frazier; and his brothers, William Mergenthal and Emmett Mergenthal.

Survivors include his daughters, Beth Craft, Burlington, and Carol Kirby, Cincinnati, Ohio; his step daughter, Pam Frazier, Cadiz, and his step daughter-in-law, Ann Frazier, Hopkinsville; his sister, Mary Ruth Mergenthal, Cincinnati, Ohio; his half brother, Gene Fasbinder, Dayton, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
