University Heights Academy’s Will Bryan fights for the ball in the Blazers’ 7-0 win over Lyon County on Friday. Bryan scored six goals in the win.

If there was any sure thing about University Heights Academy boy’s soccer this season it was senior Will Bryan.

Bryan picked up right where he left off in 2019, opening the season with a bang. Bryan scored six goals for the Blazers as they defeated Lyon County 7-0 on Friday afternoon to win the Second Region All-A Championship.

Overall, UHA head coach Frankie Thomas said he was pleased with about everything he saw in the Blazers’ opening game.

“We possessed the ball pretty good today -- there was a lot of good things I saw,” Thomas said. “We liked what we saw out there. We had a lot of missed opportunities, that’s probably the only thing I don’t like, but that’s part of it.”

Bryan scored two of his six goals in the first half, then blew up in the final 40 minutes with the other four.

Thomas said the one thing to expect from Bryan on a nightly basis is that he is going to score goals, the question is how many.

“You know to expect some goals from him,” Thomas said. “He’s an outstanding player and he plays really hard on every possession that he gets the ball. We’re just really glad that he’s on our team this year.”

If there was one thing Thomas could look at to improve upon, it was the lack of finishing good opportunities.

The Blazers had an armada of shot attempts on goal during the game. Thomas attributed some of the misses to jitters but said they will work to improve on it in practice.

“It was just about shaking those first game jitters off,” he said. “We’ve been working really hard in practice. It was about time that we got to get on the field and show what we can do. Now we know what we really need to work on and that’s finishing around the goal.”

UHA looks to make it to the All-A State Tournament for the second straight year. Thomas said he’s looking forward to potentially playing there because it prepares them for the rest of the year.

“It gives us something to look forward to,” he said. “It’s getting us ready for district and everything that’s going on here.”

The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday against Trigg County.
