I was pretty sure this day was coming but now that it’s here, it kind of sucks.
By the time this makes it to your tablet, phone, computer, mailbox or however you get your daily newspaper, I will officially be furloughed.
This means the Kentucky New Era will go on without me for a little while, which doesn’t mean much as it went about 147 years without me at one point.
The point is, the news is still here and my colleagues, nay friends, are churning it out for you at a rapid rate.
I know it’s going to be odd not to have a job to focus on every day. I’m going to take this time to take a break and take a look around for once.
For my time away from the KNE, this isn’t goodbye. I’m still your sports editor and I look forward to returning so I can continue to tell your stories.
This past Monday, Bryan Edwards was also furloughed.
Bryan had been killing it lately as mostly a member of the news department, and I can’t thank him enough for stepping up when needed.
We’re journalists first and foremost. We’re all in this together. While Bryan and I aren’t in the paper every day, we have friends continuing to do wonderful work every day of the week so wherever you’re reading this, please subscribe to your local paper.
Because of our limited page count on Tuesday, Bryan wasn’t able to put his thoughts in the newspaper. He Tweeted Monday afternoon his feelings.
“As of today, I am being furloughed,” he said. “But it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. This time is a tough one and I am hopeful we return to normal soon. I enjoyed highlighting everything the sports in Hopkinsville and the surrounding area had to offer in the last 13 months and I’m sad to have to be away from that for the time being. In this time, I’ll be less active on social media and will be enjoying time in isolation. Hopefully, all of this will blow over soon and we can get ready for what’s next. I look forward to continuing to cover and showcase all of the student-athletes in the area again soon when we’re all on the other side of this tough time.”
Again, thank you for supporting us and thanks for your continued support during this time. I know we may disagree often but that’s alright. We’ll all in this together.
As Bryan said, we’ll see you on the other side.
