Two district champions will be crowned at Givens Field on Thursday nights as Christian County and University Heights Academy will square off for the Eighth District Championship in a girl’s and boy’s doubleheader.
UHA got a first-round bye in both tournaments and automatically clinched a spot in next week’s Second Region Tournament.
County had to play its way into the final and beat Hopkinsville in the semifinals to get to this point.
For the girls, The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Tigers 1-0 thanks to a late second-half goal from Emma Fleming.
In the two teams’ first contest of the season, the Lady Blazers took out County 8-2 on Sept. 30. Kate Cansler scored four goals and Grace Pape added three in the win for UHA on that night. Lilly Larkins and Autumn Bell scored the two goals for County.
The two teams will kick things off at 5 p.m. on Thursday night.
On the boy’s side, it is a David vs. Goliath-type matchup between the Colonels and Blazers.
County comes off the heels of its first win of the season on Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over Hopkinsville, while the Blazers have been the big favorite in the district all season long and haven’t dropped a contest against an Eighth District opponent this year.
In the only matchup of the year, UHA took care of business with a 4-0 win over the Colonels on Sept. 21. The Colonels held Will Bryan to just two goals in the game and have been one of the best teams against Bryan this year.
The final will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
