The WKU women’s basketball team is still working to secure a bid in the NCAA Tournament, and the Lady Toppers took a big step toward that goal Thursday by beating Charlotte 70-67 in the Conference USA Tournament quarterfinals.

With the win, the top-seeded Lady Toppers have to win two more games to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. WKU will be back on the court today at 12:30 p.m. against Old Dominion with a spot in the C-USA Championship game on the line.

Charlotte made things interesting Thursday night against the Lady Toppers. WKU (28-4) led 57-41 with 9:41 remaining in the second half but Charlotte came storming back, tying the game at 65-65 with 2:20 left in the game. A lay-up from senior forward Chastity Gooch gave WKU a 67-65 lead with 1:21 to go, and a 3-pointer from senior guard Alexis Govan helped the Lady Toppers put it away for good.

Govan led all scorers Thursday night with 21 points and seven rebounds. Gooch, the C-USA Player of the Year, scored 19 points and added five rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Charlotte was led by junior forward Kira Gordon with 16 points.

The Lady Toppers were the best team in Conference USA over the course of the year, losing just four total games and two in conference play. WKU has now won 10 games in a row and hasn’t lost since Jan. 31.

The Lady Toppers beat Old Dominion, their next opponent, twice this season, including a win over the Lady Monarchs on March 7.
